Help me fix my dead Compak K10

Postby compliance on Fri Sep 10, 2010 2:13 am

Please help get my dead K10 back up and running.

Grinder acts like it has no power. There is no response when the power switch is flipped. When I first got it it was dead for 15 min, then started working after I fiddled with the switch and plug. It has done this sporadically after that too, but would come back to life until 2 weeks ago and it has been dead since.

I first thought it was the switch, and I got a new one from Compak but that didn't solve the issue. I borrowed a multimeter from a friend and verified the switch is working properly. I found that the relay is not making a sound when the power gets applied, but I'm not sure if this kind of relay makes a noticeable sound or not. Can anyone with a K10 verify they can/can't hear the relay switch?

I have a wiring diagram (link below). Using the multimeter I tested the resistance throughout the circuit and did not find any breaks. I also took the AC voltage at different points in the circuit with the power on. It reads 120v at all points I tested: off switch terminals 2 and 4, at all 3 relay terminals, and at each capacitor terminal. I understand the relay will only be on a short time to start the motor, but I'm not sure how to test it further.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

I can't tell you whether the relay makes a sound or not because the relay acts very quickly and the motor sound covers the sound of the relay releasing. Besides, the relay in buried inside the grinder and it's doubtful I could hear it without taking the grinder apart.

In looking at the schematic, I would say the most likely cause of the problem is a bad relay. The next most likely candidates would be the two motor starting capacitors. It would be unusual (but not impossible) for relatively new caps to fail. The only other component that could be defective would be the motor.

I would ask Compak to send you a new relay and caps. If replacing them doesn't work, then I'd say it's likely the motor is bad.
