Hacking the Cuisinart Supreme Grind for Espresso

Postby Laral on Wed May 20, 2009 8:08 pm

I just thought I'd bring attention to an excellent instructable: Hacking the Cuisinart Supreme Grind for Espresso. It shows a simple hack that turns this so-so $20+ grinder into an amazing espresso grinder for the money. I happen to have one that my neighbor bought me when I told him Sam's Club was selling them for $11 a while ago. I never opened it until I read this instructable. I tried cutting foil shims with a new scalpel blade but the foil kept tearing so I tried the #4 washer mod instead. It works unbelievably well. The grind is extremely fine and fluffy. You could probably use it for espresso until you find a "real" grinder. I use it for my Aeropress at the finest grind setting despite the instructions to use a coarser grind. It really improved the flavor noticeably. I couldn't get my Braun grinder apart to do this but there are probably other home grinders that this could be done to. The modded grinder plus the Aeropress would make an excellent travel coffee set.

The burr set on the Cuisinart bears a strong resemblance to the flat burrs found on other cheapola entry level burr grinders, a burr set that Alan Frew describes as "totally unsuitable for quality espresso production". Shifting the range of grind settings may allow you to grind finer, but there's no reason to believe it will allow you to grind better.

Have you actually tried this on espresso? Perhaps some experimentation is in order, before pronouncing this to be an "amazing" espresso grinder.

I own this grinder, and tried this Mod some months back. All I found that it does is make the size of the grind closer match the size of the fines the grinder produces. Static stayed the same, which is to say, there is still a lot.

I didnt use Aluminum foil, I use Aluminum Flashing.. Still thin, but its nothing like Aluminum foil except that they are both aluminum.
