Grinding a full pound at once, at home.

Postby mummer on Thu Nov 10, 2011 11:23 pm

Hi all,

I am a newly addicted toddy person, and I would like to find a grinder that can quickly grind a full pound, ideally in one go. I did buy a Baratza Preciso today, but am unhappy with the amount of mess (mostly from static) and the meager 5oz grounds container. I realize that there may be no home machine that can do what I want, and I'm willing to pay for a commercial grade grinder if there is one that can do this. Is it insane to get a Bunn G1? Are there any other options? Any gentle advice appreciated!

Thanks!

Pretty much any doserless commercial espresso grinder, or even a grinder with doser, if you dose out the coffee before it totally fills up.

Toddy is okay, but in my opinion really flattens out the extraction.
However try making a toddy using milk/cream instead of water, and turn the result into ice cream. YUM!

Are you going to brew 1lb in one go?Otherwise, it's better to freshly grind the coffee before using. If you preground all the coffee, it will start to get stale immediately. In a word, don't do it unless you're brewing 1lb at a time. It just takes about 15-30 seconds for a much better taste experience.

Bunn G1 is okay for that use. Not insane considering what equipments most of the people here owned.

Yes, I will be putting the entire pound into the Toddy.

If I get a doserless grinder, I will need one that can grind coarse AND dispense it into some kind of container (or directly into the Toddy...)

If you're willing to spend the buck, Bunn G series (G1,2,3 etc) seems to fit the bill. Plus they're said to make a very nice coarse grind (for press drip etc.)where most espresso grinders fail.

I think a coarse grind for toddy will be less exacting than a coarse grind for, say, press.

Finding a clean, used Bunn G2 was the best thing that has happened to drip coffee since hot water. It's really not that big. It's mainly height and is pretty narrow on the countertop. It's been suggested that you can "chop" one, but the lack of a thread on that seems to me to say that most people that have one get used to the size.

BUNN LPG bulk grinder rebuild for another great option

I single-dose mine for one cup and it works like a champ. Cleaner and crisper flavors for drip than my Vario or my K10.

L.A. is loaded with shops selling excellent beans. Why don't you let them grind it for you and load up the toddy when you get home? I'm no toddy expert, but with a grind that coarse, I doubt you would notice any fall-off in brew quality (unlike espresso).

If you are being serious, I think a bunn provides a much nicer grind.
