Possibly, but don't underestimate the ability of these old Grindmaster shop grinders. I own that old Grindmaster and even with the original burrs in it, it still does a very good job for coarse grinding. And it is fast! I have never ground a full pound, but it does ½ pound in about fifteen or twenty seconds (never actually timed it). For a very coarse grind, it would be even faster. It's also a lot nicer to look at than the contemporary Bunn or Grindmaster grinders (IMO, of course).

I came close to getting a Bunn. I roast coffee and then give a lot of it away to friends who don't have grinders. Despite my insistence that the coffee would be much better if they ground it a la minute, they ask for it ground. So, I use my Pietro T-80 with doser. I just dose onto a paper plate and transfer to the bag. It's a bit annoying but only takes a minute or less for a pound for drip grind. And, since I have my big conical for espresso, this works out pretty well. What a crazy hobby! I buy the beans, roast the coffee, buy the bags, grind to order and give it away. It reminds me of my grandparents with their garden. They spent much time harvesting vegetables and giving them away. Obviously I'm getting something out of it or I wouldn't do it. It must be an ego thing.

If you read through the Uber Grinder blog posts & look at the graphs showing fines production (or lack of) at a press pot grind you'll see that the rock crusher style Grindmaster burrs actually produced less fines then the Pressed style burrs used in the Bunn. I timed my G3 when I was seasoning the Ditting burrs & it would grind 2lbs per minute at a relatively coarse grind setting.

Admittedly, my sample size is small, but I have both an old hobart with those kind of burrs and a brand new LPG. The LPG works much better for both drip and vac pot. I think the hobart is on par with my SJ for drip. 100% agree on the looks thing!

I didn't do the testing, Ditting did but I'd imagine they were using a new, seasoned set of Grindmaster burrs. Have you replaced the burrs in the old Hobart? As far as the SJ & Major go I've used both for Vac Pot & neither is very good compared to a good brew grinder.

I'm assuming the Hobart burrs are unobtanium, but I'd love to be proven wrong!
