Grind setting for Baratza Vario with mypressi TWIST

Postby denisb on Wed Mar 10, 2010 4:56 am

Hi,

I expect there are several factors I need to get right to make the Twist deliver great espresso, but one is obviously the grind. I have now tried a couple of settings, from the Finest + Espresso (finest settings on both dials) to Finest + the notch below Espresso. Also tried Coarsest + Espresso.

I was simply wondering if anyone else had experimented with this combination before and had tips or pointers to relevant reading?

Home-Barista has been an excellent resource for me, but this is the first time I post. :) I think I have checked the FAQ's but if there is info I should have read before posting, please excuse my newbieness.

Fine tuning grinder setting with minimum waste offers general advice for dialing in a grinder that applies to your Vario/TWIST combo. It isn't possible to give you precise grind settings for your Vario since it depends on dose, coffee blend/age, and recalibration setting. That said, I've use around 16 grams with a Macro setting +1 and Micro setting near the bottom to Macro setting +2 and Micro setting near to the top.

To offer more specific advice, more information is required. How did the espresso pour (time, volume, appearance) and how did it taste? How fresh is the coffee?

Thanks! With a fresh pack of Tim Wendelboes new espresso blend (roasted 6 days ago) I found a pretty sweet spot at Macro +1 and Micro +12.

It was very helpful just to get some semblance of what macro setting to start the testing at, and I only wasted one shot :)

Previous attempts ranged from very thin shots to not getting anything through at all. I'll try to be more careful with my explanations next time.
