Got my new Compak K10 WBC

Postby cruzmisl on Mon Aug 10, 2009 10:41 pm

Hi,
After weeks of toiling over which grinder to get I finally have a Compak K10 WBC. It's a beauty. I have to work early tomorrow so no taste testing tonight but in the meantime here is a picture. Looks great next to the T1 IMHO.

I'll post more about it tomorrow night.

What's the build date (on box)?

Congrats, looks great next to your Elektra T1.

Do you have to remove anything to get access to the cleaning the chute to the doser? If so, what is involved?

OK, first, work sucks. I can't relax and drink coffee all day. When I get home I can't drink coffee because I'll never sleep  is me at night after too many espresso's :D

Anyway the grinder is great but I'm still dialing in the shots. Nice consistent pours and this thing grinds FAST. 5-6 seconds per double. Its also quieter than my MD40 was which is surprising.

As far as cleaning the chute, I don't really bother. The doser cover is easily removeable but I always sink my first shot so it flushes out any old ground that may remain, what little there is.

So far me likey!

in order to remove finger guard you must pop off the plastic cover that says fine and coarse. There are two snaps on each side. Removing this will give you the right angle to slip a screwdriver in there. A few things to help you start with this grinder that I learned from a very helpful member of this board:

start the grind setting at 30 and work your way down

The grinder will require a finer setting as the burrs break in (I am at 27 now)

try simplifying your technique. Rotate the portafilter as you twack the doser to distribute your grinds give on vertical tap and tamp once with medium pressure and no twist. The result? No channeling. The conical burrs of this grinder make redistribution techniques unnecessary to me. It was a bit frustrating to me the first 5 pounds because the grind kept changing but I think I have it nailed.

Thanks for the response.

There are 2 screws right on top of the finger guard that are easily accessible. Are there more screws behind the plastic cover across the face of the grinder that need to be accessed?

Also, isn't there supposed to be a screw on the extension on the side of the collar that is used to hold down the hopper? Mine doesn't have one, but it looks like it has a black plug instead. Has the screw for the hopper been eliminated?

It also appears that there are no grinds in the grinder and some oil on the burrs. How many pounds should be run through it to be safe before making espresso?

Any advice from K10 owners would be appreciated.

I'd buy a few pounds of cheap crap coffee from the supermarket and just run it through. Avoid really oily "espresso roast" beans.

Yes, there is a "hat" over the finger guard that has two screws and once removed you can see inside the hollow finger guard. look towards the back of the hollow finger guard and you can see two more phillips head screws. Now take your finger and pry off the plastic panel that says coarse find from either the back right or back left side. It is only held on there with two snaps. Once removed you will be able to get to the screws. As far as breaking the grinder in. Don't worry about breaking it in before using it, just be away that every morning you will need to make the grind slightly finer until the burrs settle.
