Flat Burr vs. Conical Burr Grinder....Is One Better?

Postby perstare on Sun Aug 05, 2007 10:39 pm

In the $500-$700 price point for quality grinders, are there differences between Flat Burr and Conical Burr grinders that
yield a better shot? Thanks.

If you haven't already checked it out, the Titan Grinder Project offers a lot of pro insight on the issue.
My take is that if you can afford to go conical, you most definitely should.

What grinders are you considering? Most conicals grinders lie outside your price range in the US, costing either under $400, or over $900. The Titan conicals are significantly more expensive than $700, and they're not easy to find used. But you can pick up an excellent used flat burr grinder (like the Mazzer Super Jolly) on eBay for half your price point. Although the Titan conicals seem to be more forgiving in terms of grind setting, you get much more bang for the buck with a flat burr grinder these days.

What I thought was a simple question has eluded a simple response. Recently I asked whether a Conical Burr grinder would result in a better shot (given all else being equal) over a Flat Burr. Somehow the question was never really answered.

Any thoughts from experienced users of both?

Sol, I've merged your question with your prior thread.

The simple answer is there is no simple answer. The purpose of the Titan Grinder Project is to answer your question, or at least provide more information for the debate of which is better. It may turn out that "Which is better?" is the wrong question. On a related note, Jim's Can it Beat the Mazzer Robur? is an interesting and amusing read too. The thread Macap MXK vs. Mazzer Super Jolly touches on similar points.
