Exact Super Jolly Throat Size

Postby mini on Mon Aug 10, 2009 12:44 am

Could anyone please tell me the exact inner diameter of the throat of a Mazzer Super Jolly? I understand that it is common practice to place a 58mm tamper into the throat, which is a "pretty good" fit. How much extra room is there?

I'm assuming that the throat is straight sided (i.e. not tapered) until it gets close to the burrs. Care to verify?

Thanks.

58mm. the fit is very close w/a 58mm tamper.

Ok, thanks. I'm going to take that to mean 60mm in diameter at the very most.

I've measured the outside diameter of the SJ/Mini hopper neck and come up with 2.25" (did not use calipers - just a metal rule).

When the hopper is inserted there is by design a tiny bit of wiggle room. I think 60 mm may be about right

60 millimeters = 2.36220472 inches

That leaves about .05" on either side...

fwiw, i did use vernier calipers. 58mm is what I got. not 59. And definitely not 60.

the SJ I measured is a '99 model. not sure if there are year to year variations.

and my 58mm tamper is actually 57.5mm, which I bet is true in a lot of cases.

...then I apologize for making assumptions.

It does however present interesting questions about model differences. I personally have never read about a 58mm tamper not fitting into the throat, but according to cafeIKE's post on the tamper roadshow some pretty common tampers do in fact measure 58.0mm and even above. The Reg Barber was measured to be 58.1mm.

Maybe the new-bodied Super Jollys are larger in throat diameter? Maybe the milling by Mazzer varies by machine (very doubtful)? Maybe no one has been unlucky enough to choose a conflicting tamper before...

and I thought that my question was so simple. :?

I have a reasonably new SJ, and the dimensions are 60mm at the top. This extends straight down for approx 8.8mm, at which point it narrows to approx 58.2mm. This was measured with calipers.

I've got two SJs here, an 01 & a 06. Both have a 60mm throat opening measured with a caliper, the same size as my older style Majors. Makes sense as both models accept the same hoppers.

The possibility of year to year variances still exists, but an '01 Super Jolly should rule out a simple difference between the old and new body styles.

Do you think that you might have measured below the point at which it tapers in some?
