Yep. Sorry. I have a '98 SJ in the office as well as the one at home. There is a little 1mm or so offset/step milled into both of them a few mm from the top. I measured below that - where I would expect the tamper to sit. It's probably 1-2mm wider above that step.

Well that pretty much explains it.

My last question is how far your tamper (at just under 58mm) fits down the throat, cbrucecampbell. Pretty much all the way until it drastically narrows, right before the burrs?

Nope, it doesn't go that far. It sits about 1/2 inch above that.
