I just push the manual button for a couple of seconds each morning. Then I press 'Tare' and trigger Espresso Preciso for the first weighted shot. No big deal, really

I believe the Baratza Esatto scale does this on the fly and shuts off the grinder.caffeinezombie wrote:Really interesting project you have!
Is it possible for the program to "learn" the required offset by itself by calculating the rate at which the grinds are coming out?

No it doesn't. Not with a porta filter.
If you're brewing espresso, there is nothing out there which interfaces directly with a porta filter
Also, Espresso Preciso is meant for high end doserless grinders, which literally have nothing out there right now with real time weight integration.

Four days ago I ran across an Instagram from Decent Espresso working on the same thing with their own scale but reportedly compatible with the Acaia. I'm interested in having my Acaia scale automatically shut off my grinder, especially if there's an IOS app involved.

I was referring to the offset calculation question that I quoted. When Baratza first demoed the Esatto at the SCAA Expo, I noticed it shut off slightly early so that the falling grounds would make the total reach the preset weight. I asked Kyle about it, and I believe he said there was an algorithm to calculate the rate of grind and use that to anticipate the shutoff time.haroldo_psf wrote:No it doesn't. BTW, if you get your product into early production before the next Expo in Atlanta, you can enter it in the Best New Product competition: http://www.scaaevent.org/?p=best-new-product. I think there would be a lot interest.

That's exactly what I do. If you notice, my Super Jolly goes off about 1 gram before the target. That's that "offset" field in the app. It can be done automatically, and I will do that in the next rev of the app.
The amount of coffee that comes out of the chute after the motor turns off is very consistent with the same beans. All that it needed is one or two test trials, and the offset can be calculated. It's pretty easy to do actually. As a matter of fact, it can even be done mid dosing (e.g. dose 10g, calculate offset, finish dose to 17g).
About the show in Atlanta...I'm just a Joe Schmoe who loves coffee. I just made something for fun, and can't compete with real companies with resources. I wish...

I think having the ability to calibrate separately is cool too. I was just asking because it felt like it would make for a more elegant solution. With the large conicals which chew through beans like nothing I would imagine it's trickier to do the calculations on the fly.
Looking forward to see more from you!

I've often wondered about a portafilter with built in weight function. It could have a digital readout on the handle. And it could communicate with a grinder and phone app via Bluetooth. No need for a separate scale. And just tare it with the basket in place.
I've seen coffee measuring spoons with weight measuring capability. Although they couldn't communicate and sync with other devices.
Not that I have any clue how to build such a portafilter.

Hi all!
Second rev of the app is up. New features include automated workflow (auto PF place and remove detection, auto tare, self calibration, etc).
As always, max screen and sound on please
