Doserless conversion Wega rebranded Compak K10 WIP

Postby smite on Fri Jun 03, 2011 6:19 pm

I managed to unexpectedly get one of these at a great price. I have to say this thing is huge and grinds amazingly well. After seeing this thing my wife is now fully convinced that I am insane. I bought this directly from Tom at Wega USA who gave me an outstanding price. It is a Wega Max 6.8 which is a Compak k10 Conical.

After much searching I have found several threads on the chute mod and the sweeper mod but was wondering if anyone had information on disabling the autofill in order to safely remove the black plastic finger guard so I could do the chute mod.

Additionally does anyone know if a doserless conversion is remotely possible? If so, if you could provide pointers to information that would be greatly appreciated.

I also was looking at parts and suspect that replacement/mods for doserless tubes etc. for other grinders could work but was wondering if anyone been successful.

Some examples are here: http://www.espressoparts.com/EspressoGr...izingParts

If anyone has information to help determine if the parts from a K8 or K10 fresh would fit cleanly to convert that would be greatly appreciated. A conversion that looks close to factory would be ideal. If I can possibly integrate timed grinding into the mix that would be utopia. I am just trying to see if I have to start from scratch for a conversion.

Update: see page two for first phase of conversion

I tried doing a doserless mod with a funnel, but felt it wasn't worth it because it was too messy. Getting something that's just the right size to get everything in to the PF without making a mess might take a little work, or just trying out a bunch of different sized funnels. My guess is that something like the Mazzer doserless funnels would work well, but they're kind of expensive. I'm not a huge fan of the doser, but at least it gets everything where it's going neatly.

As far as chute mods, I took off the finger guard, which is just a couple screws, and that allows easy access to the chute. You can cut off a few more little bits to clean it up, but just taking the one piece off is enough to make single dosing easy.

Thanks for the reply. I was most concerned with removing or disabling the autofill switch located internally within the black plastic finger guard container. I have no issue with understanding how to remove the finger guard itself. I simply did not want to leave a switch with the metal power connectors exposed and hanging loose by the two wires after removing the guard.

On the Mazzers with an autofill function you would remove the two wires from the busbar (found inside the grinder) & add a jumper between the two connections on the busbar. There would be a second switch mounted inside the bottom of the doser which you could leave in place but you would also have to remove those two wires & add the jumper on the busbar. Once this is done the switch on the side of the grinder would work as a standard on/off switch. Again this is how it would be done on a Major. My K10WBC did not come with the autofill function so I have no experience with the K10 wiring.

John thanks very much for the information. I will take a look inside and see if I can do what you are suggesting.

I didn't have an autofill switch on mine, is that a difference between the WBC and standard models?

This version is the non WBC/ pro barista version, so it is just the k10 conical. It has the polished aluminum tamper as well.

Looks like I may have found the parts to do a conversion to doserless. I will post pics when done.

I have the regular K10 as well. Removing the autofill is easy. Unscrew the black plastic box, disconnect the wires from the switch, grab some insulated wire connectors from Rat Shack and connect the wires directly. You will want to pull the wires back into the body to keep them out of the way. I routed them to the bottom of the unit, wrapped up the extra cord, and connected them down there. Then take all the extra plastic autofill bits off.

Max

Thanks very much for the information. Once I get the parts I ordered for the conversion to doserless I will post pics. I am essentially converting this to a K10 Shop without the built in timer.
