Doserless Conversion - Chute vs. Spout?

Postby PKR on Mon Oct 26, 2009 7:19 pm

I want to convert my Super Jolly to a doserless because I only make a couple of shots a day and the doser is messy.

I am wondering if the spout is messy, sending grinds to the surface whereas the large chute will contain them. Any thoughts on which is better?

I don't have a static guard on my SJ w/doser (that I knows of). Will I need one with a doserless? Are they prone to it in some way? In fact, what are the signs of static... clumping?

Does the static guard come off easily in order to clean the small chute?

Thanks for any help.

Peter,

my personal preference if I had a SJ for a doserless conversion would be the "funnel" http://www.espressoparts.com/MAZ_180 ..

without Finger Protector and without anti-static filter, to make easier the cleaning of the small chute..
(just make sure to avoid the temptation to put your fingers inside the chute :P )

+1

The longer the snout, the more difficult it is to extract the coffee from the chute.
A short chute into a yoghurt cup funnel maybe the best solution.

Here's an easy and cheap method:
1) keep the doser body,
2) remove the doser vanes, handle, etc.
3) cap the middle hole with a bolt, washer, and nut
4) remove the static guard (if still there)

With this set-up, you can easily brush out the chute and doser body once the beans have cleared. I also removed my portafilter holder and grind into a basket topped with a yogurt cup funnel (easier for Pavoni baskets). This was on a Bregant grinder, but I think it would work on most commercial grinders.

Thanks for the replies. I've never wanted to spoil the looks of my side-by-side Olympia Cremina Lever machine and Super Jolly with a Home Depot self-made chute or some other contraption. The funnel is expensive, but elegant. Thanks to all!

I originally put the funnel conversion kit on my Super Jolly & later moved it to one of my Majors. The funnel set up has static issues & personally I find my dosered Major with the velcro mod/ Schectormatic makes far less of a mess then the funnel set up. If you can beat the static issues the funnel kit would be cleaner, if not you will find grounds all over the body/surrounding area. Check with Owen @ Phaelon Coffee before buying a kit as he had the best price by far when I bought mine.
