Doser not filling up... please help

Postby joe on Fri Jul 03, 2009 12:20 am

Help! I have a Mazzer Super Jolly and just replaced the burrs and the timer. After putting it all back together, no grounds come out into the doser. I have taken it apart and re-assembled it multiple times today, all with the same result. I have checked the forum and could only find one thread that came close to talking about this issue, but alas to no avail. The motor is spinning clockwise, it just appears that the burrs are not grinding, at least not very well. If I make it very coarse, some grounds shoot out, but mostly just husk looking stuff.
Please help me, I need this grinder running tomorrow! : )
Thanks
Josh

Here's how to put back the top burr. Turn the motor off; then screw in the top burr until it goes all the way down and touches the bottom burr, now back off (loosen) by a quarter turn (or to the pasted on marker, if the grinder still has it)

If that is what you did, I'm out of advice; but sometimes people doing this the first time don't screw back the burr nearly enough.

I did screw the adjuster on top back to "zero" and backed it off a fraction.

Perhaps the initial setting was so fine that your superfine grinds clogged the burrs. If so, disassemble and clean the burrs with a pointed wooden toothpick and stiff brush, reassemble, and set your initial grind setting coarser.

Back it off 90 degrees (a full 1/4 turn) from zero and try again.

When I first replaced the burrs on my Rocky, I found that the marked grind scale was no longer correct. The Mazzer is a different machine, but I would do what Jim said and not just go to zero on the scale.

Another possibility is that the threads are now cross-threaded and the assembly jams at too coarse a setting - but that seems unlikely.

Ignore the big numbers on the collar. The "start here" sticker is placed at the factory for the recommended grind setting for espresso. It's approximately one-quarter turn from the true zero point (see How to find the grinder true zero point and Mazzer reassembly problem after burr replacement for more details).

Again, nobody said screw to zero. We're saying keep screwing until the burrs touch, this requires about ten to twenty full turns (sorry, I never bothered counting, but it's a lot).

Guys, thank you so much for all your help - here was the problem: apparently the burrs were incorrect.
they were the right size, etc. but the bottom ones edges were going the wrong direction. They were sealed in their packaging from Mazzer (or wherever they come from) but somehow it looks like I got two tops, not sure exactly. Anyway, all is well! Thanks again,
Josh
By "zero" I did mean true zero. Thanks all!

The upper and lower burrs are supposed to be identical, as far as I know.
