Delta timer for Mazzer

Postby LytBrite on Wed Apr 27, 2011 11:19 pm

I am considering adding a Delta timer to my Super Jolly. Has anyone had any success with a similar project? Can you please give me some pointers towards wiring it correctly?

hi.

I added a similar digital timer to my mazzer major. My major has a contactor switch inside it so I just wired it through the digital timers normally open circuit.

I think the delta timer probably has a higher wattage rating so you might be able to wire the motor directly, also being a smaller motor than the major. Check out my thread Modding the Mazzer.

Could you do us a huge favor and maybe post some photos of how you wired it ? I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

I second that request, Craig. I have removed the stop switch from the relay group and bridged the starter in the doser. I know that there is some electrical understanding needed to properly add a timer based on the motor wattage and the timer itself. I would be very grateful for some more discussion about this mod, since you have put it in successfully.

Watching your videos, I have a question. If you major has a similar start mechanism to my SJ, there is a three point power switch (off, on and start). It looks like you start the grind from a switch on the timer and then turn the grinder's power off on the grinder. If I am correctly understanding your setup, have you considered the possibility of starting both the grinder and the timer using the start switch?

Also, These sort of timers are commonly found installed into the side of many roburs out there. Is there not enough room in your major to install it in your grinder or do you simply prefer an external component?

Thanks for your contributions.

I used a simple photo darkroom timer.

Hi again,

My Mazzer came with a auto start(after 6 or so doses) and a auto cut off if the doser gets too full(Which none of us use anyway :D )

I disconnected the auto shut off microswitch on the doser and wired the other auto start micro switch wires through the normally closed circuit in the delay timer.

I am not too clued up with electrics too but as I understand it, the grinders circuit is a normally open circuit, when you turn the grinder on it closes that circuit. I turn my grinder( which would normally start the motor but because I have wired the wires through the delay timer it doesn't start the motor. I wired a switch to the delay timer that starts the timer. So when I push it it closes the circuit for the amount of time set on the timer. The switch is wired from the 'signal' terminal to the 12v terminal, how i think it works is that as soon as you send 12v through the signal terminal the switch inside the timer closes which closes the switch in the grinder which turns the grinder on which grinds the coffee which..... I could go on forever

I hope this helps.

I connected the live from the main wire to the grinder to number 2 and the neutral to number 1, the wires from the microswitch that was in the bottom of the doser that turned the grinder on after 6 doses I connected to 3 and 4. And the signal wires connect to 11 and 6.

Perfect.. Thanks for that.

One last question, which make and model of timer is this ?

Oh and you mention a switch.. did you buy a switch ? I noticed in your videos you seem to press something on the side of the timer..

Thank You

It is a Rhomberg DHC10J, here is the link to the site. http://www.myvirtualpaper.com/doc/acdc-...c.co.za#22

The switch is a simple 2 pole switch, when it is pressed it connects the two poles which then energize the contactor switch inside the timer. Here is a pic of one, http://www.bulgin.co.uk/HTMLDocs/news/C...Switch.php . It is not the one i used but it does the same one. I am planning on building a Aluminum housing for the timer and mounting it on the left of the doser facing upwards.

Ahh thanks. I really appreciate this.

Ok, one last question (I swear!).. I assume your grinder has two switches.. Could you have just reused one of the switches instead of using the 2 pole switch you added ? I'm not critiquing, just trying to understand how this all works.

Thanks !

I wanted to have a ; start; reset; and override switch on my panel. So I guess it is just a preference. I don't use the 'second click' on the mazzer rotary switch
