Compak K10 WBC - Do I have a burr problem?

Postby Tiger22 on Mon Sep 20, 2010 4:50 pm

I've just taken delivery of a new Compak K-10 WBC grinder. I've got her all set up but I'm not convinced the burrs are properly installed as when I remove the hopper and look down at the burrs when the motor is running the top burr appears to wobble slightly about the axis. I'm a bit concerned that there is some rubbing going on somewhere as the rotation of the burrs doesn't sound or look particularly stable. Can anyone who has a K-10 offer some advice before I try and raise the issue with Compak? When you look down at your burrs does there appear to be any wobble?

Thanks, Tony

Okay gedankenexperiment. Put a thin but sharp dot on one star point. Put your camera on a tripod above it. Turn on the grinder. When it's running, take a picture. If the circle 'drawn' by the point is vague, you've got burr wobble.

Although you have to read Greg's point here

Probably no Gedankenexperiment needed, although it's a neat technique -- I had the same conniption when I got mine: then I realized the Phillips head of the screw that mounts the burr was slightly off center, but the burr was fine.

You may be right. The upper burr is attached with what looks like a hex bolt with a washer underneath. They definitely wobble but the burr, on closer inspection may be OK. Need some sleep now so no time to play but will double check eveything tomorrow before putting her through her paces.

On a side note my grinder is labelled the "Professional Barista" as I think Compak have ended their WBC sponsorship and maybe had to rename the grinder.

Thanks, Tony

I agree with Roeland/Jim - burrs may appear to wobble when in fact they're not. On a related note, I always run a few pounds of stale coffee through a new grinder to smooth out flashing / swarf / whatnot. Otherwise the grind setting may drift as the burrs settle in and falsely lead you to believe there's a problem. See Is this grinder break-in? and New grinder with poorly machined burrs for background information.

I noticed this when I was checking out their site a few weeks ago. The product images have the new label Photoshopped in over the old WBC branding.

My screw wobbles the same way, and Jim Schulman said his does too. The screw is off center, not the burr. You can do the picture thing or just look at the outer edge of the rotating burr. It doesn't wobble.

The screw on mine is off center as well, but like others, not the burr itself.

On a somewhat related note, have any owners noticed that the adjusting collar and upper burr assembly will tilt a bit when you tighten down the adjustment lock screw? I can actually tilt mine a noticable amount. Should I be worried about this? Grinder seems to work great but, I just got it so have no reference for comparison.

Thx.
