Compak K10 WBC Maintenance - Page 2

Hi.

You can clean the grinder without taking it apart. If you remove the finger guard, you can get access to the impellers and clean them with a cutetip and a vacuum cleaner. I do this every now and then.

You need a cutetip or brush, a flash light, a vacuum cleaner, and a 6 mm allen wrench

Cheers

Evidently they decided to put it back as my K10WBC built 9/09 came with one installed. They have also installed a brass threaded insert in the hole instead of cutting the threads in the alloy cover. No idea what the old locking screw looked like but the current one has a knurled head for adjusting & a plastic piece on the other end that tightens against the inner case.

I recall seeing a newer version with a proper cap on the adjusting knob (the doserless has this as well), but I didn't realize they'd added the locking screw back. I suppose I'd have to conclude they decided it wasn't stable enough without the screw. The burr thread does have a good bit of backlash, which is obvious when you turn on the motor and it torques. The inside of the knob isn't threaded on my grinder, so yours is probably the same cast piece with the threaded brass insert you mentioned.

There is some play in the adjustment mechanism so I like having the locking screw which does prevent that slight movement when you start the grinder. One thing I didn't care for was the hopper retaining screw that presses on the hopper base. The hopper lid is a tight fit & the hopper can lift right out if you don't use the screw but tightening a screw against plastic could end up cracking it. Instead I drilled a hole in the base so the screw sets into it & retains the hopper just like on the older Mazzers.

Since I have the hopper on & off regularly I wanted to be able to back off the screw without looking for a screwdriver every time. I had a wooden adjustment handle left over from my Major Cocobolo project that came with the wrong size threaded rod installed. After removing the 6mm stud & cutting the handle back I was able to set it up with 5mm rod & a spacer so it would work with the K10.

This allows me to quickly back off the hopper locking screw & also gives me more leverage for dialing in small adjustments.
