Coffee in chute Quamar M80E

Postby Nauti on Sat Nov 26, 2011 11:35 am

Any idea how much coffee is retained in the chute of the Quamar M80e? I played around with this grinder today but the finger guard blocks the view completely. If I understand from the review on HB (non elec. version, M80) the chute is sloped, I hope this result in little retention.

I was impressed with the quality/price. Also, the clumping was ok (there were some, but Naked extraction indicated that they are not a problem) and grinds were dosed neatly into the filter (Tapping the filter during grinder is needed though when dosing larger volumes (>15g) otherwise it spills).

The thing that is holding me back is the amount of coffee in the chute, I have no idea how much this is, if it is only a couple of grams I can live with it.

Sorry, I have one and have been trying to check retention for those who are interested.

I use a funnel from OE so I can get 21 gram doses with close to zero mess.

The clumping on mine is horrible by appearance but with a naked portafilter the extraction looks and tastes fine. My Le'Lit doesn't clump at all compared to the M80E.

Let me get out to my garage lab and start poking around for you today.

I cleaned the grinder thoroughly, put 19.9 grams in and got 16.7 grams out.

I placed a random jar lid I found in the kitchen on top of the beans and it was weighted down by a 6 oz cupping glass.

Attached is a pic of the grind chamber, and sticking my finger into the throat I could feel it blocked by grinds. I'd guess 1.5 grams in the grind chamber and another 1.5 grams in the throat?Image

about 3 grams, that is acceptable I think.

You also experienced the clumping, but also observed that it doesn't result in a defects during the extraction. I guess the lumps are not really tightly packed.

Maybe other users any thoughts on the clumping issue?

It is also a stepped grinder, are the steps fine enough?

Oh, yeah, I think the steps are fine enough but mine is still breaking in, I think I've only got about 3 pounds through mine.

In the review of the dosered version "Unless you really want to dial it into the millimeter, the stepped settings will work just fine."

Thanks for the info. It seems that there are not that many quamar users around. I'm still a bit doubting about the clumping but I think I will just take the risk.

Yes, I definitely have come to the conclusion that the clumping is not affecting extraction or taste.
