I've searched for pictures of coarse grind size and there seems to be quite a variation between definitions of course. How would you all describe the grind in this picture? Its ground using my Vario-w on the coarsest setting. Seems to me to not be very coarse and more on the coarse to medium size.

I could be wrong, but it looks like a coarse French press grind. Anything coarser would only be good for a percolator.

Just use taste as a guide. If that's for press and it tastes sour then grind finer once it gets bitter you have gone too far.

Coffee is a sensory experience use them!

That's exactly what my course grind looks like from my Cuisinart . I do love French press coffee. It is just that you have two make three cups at once to do it right, then it is cold so I have to make Vietnamese coffee with the last cup.
