Clumps, grind densities and doser mechanics

Postby farmroast on Mon Dec 28, 2009 12:12 pm

How do clumps happen? What are the structures of various types of clumps? The grinds spray out of my Major and slam against the doser wall. The doser fins peel off of the pile and drop various amounts with each pull of the doser lever into the basket. Each drop appears to have different densities with various size and densities and amounts of clumps. After trying to manipulate the pf around while filling to even the load I can then feel different densities in the basket when pushing down with my fingertip. Are dosers designed to work better with more coffee in them than a single dose? With a larger amount of coffee in the doser does the overall density become more even? Is the only solution stirring the grinds in the basket or some other added step? Is it better to tighten the fins down or have them grabbing a larger mass?

I think it has more to do with lower burr holder which has fins that throw the grinds out of grinding chamber and into either doser or spout (for doserless). It also blows the air to the grinds. Some brands seem to make stronger air current than others possibly due to the fin design itself. It may be the combination of those fins, the size and shape of grinds exit hole that may contribute to how fluffy or clumpy the grinds end up being.
