Changing the Mazzer doser gasket and anti-static screen....help!

Postby alex e on Sun Nov 14, 2010 5:34 pm

I'm going doserless on my Mazzer SJ with Owen's kit. The old doser gasket is just disgusting, and normally I'd hit it with some solvent and reinstall but since this is a "food area" I'd prefer not to use anything unsafe. Also how does the anti clumping screen install?

Any tricks or tips for getting all the old adhesive off in a professional manner? Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that the anti-static/-clumping/-finger screen simply fits in between the doser and the body via friction. Tighten the funnel down and it should stay.

Various counter-top cleaners will dissolve adhesives sometimes. If it is really stubborn, rubbing alcohol or acetone should do the trick - both will evaporate cleanly and quickly (i.e. no harmful residues).

I first try to remove the bulk of the old stuck on gunk by using any flat plastic tip, then use a small bit of paper towel with Goo-Gone on it. Vigorous rubbing with that, followed by a rub down with a bit of paper towel soaked with some Fantastik does the trick. I clean plenty of grinders using these two products plus a generous initial dose of Greased Lightning degreaser. I wouldn't drink any of this stuff but by the time you do the final wipe down with Fantastik (or even just a damp cloth) and run one or two practice shots through - you'll be fine.

By the way - my original old doser gaskets always appear to be adhered to the grinder body but the recommended placement with the funnel is to adhere the screen to the funnel. This makes it easier to do a thorough cleaning of the exit chute should you ever wish to do that - because the screen now removes with the funnel. Tip: the screen is supposed to be mounted such that if you look into the funnel towards the exit chute (after mounting funnel) the grid is on the left and the open parts of the screen are on the upper right. If you screw that up (I have more than once!) just PM me and I'll send along a spare gasket at N/C by 1st Class mail.

OK I'll give it a shot. WIll acetone harm the paintjob? I usually use mineral spirits, but not in the kitchen.....

I seem to have seen an exploded diagram on a Mini E, Robur, or the like showing precise locations for everything. Maybe Espresso parts had them.

Acetone might start to break down the paint a little... just try not to drip very much.

Indeed, EspressoParts.com has an Super Jolly exploded view here.

Acetone is overkill and the fumes are bad for you. I've always been able to get the gunk off with Goo Gone.

The gasket only goes on my machine one way unless you ignore its shape and using the gasket to secure the screen to the funnel seems odd and again won't follow the matching shapes of the SJ and the gasket. Look back there sometime. In the end I used the gasket on the machine with the screen behind it and then secured the funnel using the doser's bolts. We shall see what transpires. As far as old grinds stuck in the chute, I guess I'll vacuum them out, or periodically remove the gasket and screen, then replace. Holding the screen in place between funnel and machine seems more convenient to be certain.

Now I gotta figure out how to secure the motor cover.

As a quick follow up, the grounds do really pile up behind the screen and you have to brush them out after the initial rush of beans exit the funnel, which you keep one eye on and the PF that's getting dumped into, and one eye on the hopperless setup to keep beans from flying everywhere.....still getting used to the workflow obviously. One double a day ensures some grinds remain behind unless removed manually.
