Ceramic conical burr sharpness

Postby ggcadc on Fri Apr 15, 2011 1:42 am

I just got a Grindripper, I'm not sure it's right, but the ceramic conical burrs are not sharp, are they supposed to be? doesnt seem right to me and the grind is not very consistent...

I don't have a Grindripper, but the ceramic burrs on my Kyocera CM-45CF, Porlex, and Hario Skerton aren't sharp. Perhaps the ones on the Hario are the most well-defined, though.

For grind inconsistency I'd look towards the lack of stabilisation of the burrs in these kind of devices, rather than their sharpness.

thanks guys, you were right on it, i wrapped the upper burr (which was completely lose) with a little teflon tape(just on go round), seems to keep it in place, MUCH more consistent now. glad to know I dont have some defective burrs and that they are capable of grinding to my standards.

Glad you got the GD worked out. Nice little grinder for the cost. The ceramic burrs grind on a principle more like classic stone millstones than metal cutters so they more crunch and crush than fracture and cut. The particle shape ends up a bit different.
The teflon tape was a good idea.
