Bought the Macap MXK - Page 6

Well, things are improving. Getting better with taming this monster. Getting really good shots, more consistent. I tried various methods: Weighing the beans first for grinding single doses, vs. putting an oz of beans in the hopper and dosing by weighing the ground coffee. I like the latter, but it's more difficult to adjust the grind (machine needs to be on, beans need to be gone). So I've settle on single doses, and that way I can make adjustments after every dose if I need to.

I have also settled on 15 - 17 g doses. This does seem to be the best range for the grinder. I'm in the range of 24-27 seconds for ratios of 75% to 100% (ground coffee to brewed coffee). These parameters seem to give me the best results.

Today pulled great shots. Really great shots. :D

Glad to read that the shots are good now. But the fact that you seem to prefer shots in the 15-17g with this coffee today does not mean that this is the best dose for this grinder.
As far as I have experienced there is no such thing as a best dose for any grinder. Although I do find that the MXK is more forgiving of sloppy grooming with a lower dose than the B-Vario (that is no revelation).

I just finished reading the 33 page thread on the Titan grinders, and I had a few questions:

1. Someone mentioned thwacking the dose DURING the grinding process. I've been gently turning the doser AFTER all the grinding is done, so that coffee lands neatly in the PF. Will the former method give me better distribution? Of course, with my single dosing, the fact is that more than half of the ground coffee sits in the chute, and has to be brushed out into the doser after the grind anyway.

2. Several folks mentioned a bitterness to the MXK's shots. I have noticed a bitter finish to some of the shots but figured it was still about my technique. Is there a way to mitigate this with the MXK?

3. Once again, I read that the MXK produced better shots in the 13-14g range, lower than I typically dose these days at 15-17g. (Hairbender at 20g). Why would the lower dose produce better results?

4. Currently, my process is to single dose, then go from the doser directly to PF. My technique now is very non-interventionist at this point: I may or may not use my palm in semi-circular miovements to even out the mound, then tap the bottom of PF once or twice on the padded countertop, and then tamp. No WDT. The pours look good from my LM basket ridgeless basket. Is this what most folks are doing with this or other large dosered grinders? Are some of you dosing into the basket first, and then putting it in the PF?

PS I've moved the discussion to Titan Grinder Project since it pertains to the Titan thread.

I do the same with my new MXK .

I grind first (18g), then I dose on the portafilter with a VST basket.

I do not even have to level de grind, then I tamp making sure I am at level, and the shots are coming great from my Alex Duetto II.

I have not found any bitterness on the 18g shots. In fact, I have been pulling espressos and 6 oz cappas and they have been sweet to say the least.

For the record I come from a Macap M4.

I roast them on my Behmor and take them to the very first snips of the second crack, always trying to extend the gap between FC and S. Crack using a Variac.

I have tried two different blends, one is Paradise Roasters Espresso Classico that I purchased in green beans (Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Central America).

And the other is a blend that I roast separately and the grind needs to be finer and I like it even better !
I got the beans from Roastmasters :

50% Colombia Tolima "el Meridiano"
50% Ethiopia Sidamo Natural Guji
