Black Paint for Rancilio MD-50

Postby w1ngsmk on Mon Jan 25, 2010 4:51 pm

Anyone ever repaint a Rancilio MD series...I'm going through mine and want to
cover up the wear and tear on the painted Metal base and Burr/Doser assemblies..
Any specific paint used, success et al...

I was under the impression that grinders are powder coated.

Well, Powder Coating can be a pain...proper prep, then choice of application, yada yada et al.....I'm not looking at stripping and re-apply, just sprucing up appearances....there is a good covering on these metal piece's, I'll probably just clean with TSP and shoot a light film over the current covering to mask the wear, and see how this turns out....was just curious if anyone had gone to this extent on their grinders...

I personally haven't...Yet :D (I have a San Marco SM90 I'm in the process of restoring), I know this guy has stripped down and repainted his Mazzer though. http://www.monkeyfaq.com/mazzer/prep_work.html

what I use a high temp spry paint from AutoZone.. I also painted a boiler and the exterior of my Aurora last year.. and paint is holding great..

PS.
a little something I do when using high temp paint is heat up whatever I'm about to paint with a torch...
NO CRAZY HOT, but enough that the paint dry almost by contact. (I only do that with high temp paint)

I repainted a MD50. But I tried to match the new colour with the original powder coating.
The complete Body was abraded with 60 sandpaper and then with 120 and 240 finished.

After some layers of primer I sprayed three layers of silk grey.

The inside of the doser was kept in abraded aluminum.
