Bean level in hopper affects grind?

Postby atoschi on Wed Dec 01, 2010 5:04 am

hi, I'm trying to find out if the amount of beans in your hopper effects the grind? Is there really a difference between having a full hopper to a half full hopper? And are there any other benefits to keeping your hopper full other than aesthetics? Cheers

As the hopper empties, the grind setting drifts towards more coarse. How much it drifts and the minimum column of coffee beans needed to keep the grind setting unchanged depends on the grinder. I keep around a half pound of coffee in the hopper, but as you can see from the discussions below, there are many single dose fans:

Is single dose [without hopper] grinding inconsistent?
Single dose versus hopper grinding: an experiment
Single dose versus hopper grinding: hypothesis about the exact difference.
Leaving coffee beans in hopper
Freshness of hopper vs. hopperless
Do you grind by the dose without the hopper?
What does single dosing lose?
