Baratza Virtuoso Preciso adjustment changing during the grind

Postby Mr Faineant on Tue Sep 06, 2011 11:27 pm

I recently purchased a Baratza Virtuoso Preciso, and am quite happy with it, except for one thing. The micro adjustment ring moves 2 settings during a 15 second grind. I contacted Baratza about it within the first week of having it, and they said that there was a manufacturing issue with the first batch, apologized, and sent me a replacement. They were fantastic about it. I have had the replacement one for around a week now, and this one does the same thing. Also, the grind settings on this one vary significantly from the original one. Where I used to use a Macro 10, Micro E setting, I now have to use a 12 G/H setting. This isn't an issue, just strange that there is such a discrepancy between the 2 machines.

Has anyone else had any trouble with the micro adjustment ring moving during the grind?

Yup, that happened with my Preciso, and I've seen a few other reports of the same issue. In my case, the problem was solved by installing a replacement micro adjust button with a beefier detent (sent free by Baratza). Since then, I haven't noticed any drift. See my posts here and the discussion they generated (spilling onto p. 8).

I wouldn't worry about the different factory calibration re: the grind on machine #2.

They offered to send me a replacement ring on the first one, but I had just bought a new grinder, not applied for a job as a grinder repair man, so I asked for a replacement. I don't want to deal with the hassle of getting this one replaced, so maybe I'll just do that then.

I know the feeling. It's really very easy to pop off the old button and install a new one. Hope that does the trick for you.

Pierce, from Baratza, has just offered to swap it with a refurbished Vario. That seems more than reasonable, right? I'd be a fool to say no?

I'd go for the refurb Vario for sure. Nice people to offer you such an upgrade.

Wow, he is even offering to match the 11 month warranty I have remaining on my Preciso.

I'm astounded, what great service. I almost feel bad! Almost.

Yup, that's a good offer that I'd be very tempted to take. Gotta love Baratza.
