Baratza Vario made loud bang, no longer grinds

Postby BillK on Sat Sep 25, 2010 3:10 pm

I've had this machine for several months. I have had some problems with wandering grind settings, and have been in contact with Kyle, off and on. I think my current problem is un-related, but I mention it anyway.

Today, as I was grinding, the machine suddenly made a loud "bang". The coarse adjustment lever, which was all the way up, shot down to the bottom.

Now, the lower burr will spin when no beans are in the machine, but it stops if I add a half dozen beans and turn it on. No torque.

Is this a simple problem to deal with, or should I be sending the machine back to Chris for service? I assume it is a warranty issue, but really don't know, and I don't want to start digging into a machine under warranty w/o some advice.

I'm not sure about the loud bang but it sounds like a belt problem. You could open it up & have a look but if it is in warranty I'd just ask to have it replaced. For some reason they can't seem to properly adjust ALL the belts on the production line so some buyers get good ones & some don't. It seems you have to open your new grinder & inspect it to see if the belt needs tensioning.

Sounds like the same symptoms as Baratza Vario death by single stone. E-mail Chris or Kyle, I'm sure either will square it away.

Sounds exactly like what happens when you grind into a stone. Have you inspected the burrs? Are they ok?

It might be that the belt was damaged also.

If it was a stone, it is not probably covered by warranty.
