Baratza Vario macro cam slides by itself

Postby uranium on Sat Dec 19, 2009 4:28 am

I just received and started using the Baratza Vario grinder. Well, mine is a Ditting Vario since it is a European 220V version. I noticed when I put the macro cam (lever) about a third of the way down and started the grinder, the vibration would make it slide down by itself to the coarser settings. Does anyone have the same problem?

Is there a way to increase the detente force of the macro arm so it will hold itself stronger on each click?

There is no "adjustment" possible for the detent tension (sorry). The Macro arm is a one-piece molded part. We modified out tooling for this part back in April 2009. All current builds of the Ditting/Mahlkoenig Varios would have this new arm in it. I don't know the serial number for MK/Ditting when they started using the new arm, but I can find out and post it (for Baratza Varios, all since #271 have the stiff detent). If the problem persists for you, the entire Macro arm would need to be replaced. This is not a user changeable part, as it would require (almost) complete disassembly of the grinder. I hope this answers your question.

I reported the problem to Ditting/Mahlkoenig and they are sending me a replacement Vario that is supposed to be the updated version. I look forward to trying it. Nice service from Ditting!
