Baratza Vario has static problems after macro adjustment

Postby tcaton on Thu Sep 15, 2011 8:26 pm

I keep my Vario pretty much dialed in for espresso. I'll experiment with the micro arm, but the macro pretty much stays put. When I make the occasional cup of Aeropress, I maintain the fine grind and just adjust the rest of the process accordingly. However, one (memorable) time I did adjust the macro arm in order to judge its performance with a press pot. After adjusting it back to it's usual espresso setting (grinder running & empty), I then noticed a significant static problem. Rather than the grounds landing in the portafilter in a nice neat mound, they sprayed out everywhere and made a huge mess on the counter. That persisted several days, even after disassembling & brushing/vacuuming it out. After a few more days, it randomly started to behave again. I chalked it up to bad karma and proceeded to forget about it.

The other day I adjusted the macro arm in order to make copious amounts of Aeropress, and after returning it to the espresso setting the symptom has again returned. This has officially become a pattern. Has anyone else's Vario done this, or is it just my copy?

I dont know much about static but i must say on my Vario anytime the macro adjustment has been changed for french press when returned to espresso it is always out and i need to waste alot of coffee to reset the grind to where it was , I cant knock the machine as this is the first grinder have ever used so i am probably doing everything wrong but am beginning to think that i need [like alot of people on here } two grinders one dedicated for espresso only and the other for general use. I have got my eye on the K30 for espresso they use one of these in a small espresso bar in Aberystwth superb shots every visit always consistent in quality and flavour IMO got to be the best coffee in mid wales, If my wife left me i think there would be one of these grinders on my work top a couple of hours later
