Baratza Vario Grinder - First Look - Page 11

Hey Nick,

What is the key lock for on your machine? Looks like a high security ace II keyway. Has it got some radio active isotopes in there?

Jeff, key locks are pretty standard on auto machines. The key allows you to enter "programming" mode on the dosing panel so that you can configure the dose for each button. I think the idea is to prevent baristas from unwittingly or maliciously changing the dose from whatever the keyholder sets it to. You're right, though, it's very secure... they use the same keys on every Elektra from every year since 1997, AFAIK.

Well Nick,
at least you don't have to worry about losing them.

I think I will still wait on this grinder (since I already committed to one) and at very least it will do some of the tasks Big Max can't do as easily. Worst case will be to gift it to my Dad for permanent mocha pot duty. :(

Or perhaps, "gift me sir, please, sir." LOL

Unless you get a used one....yeah, I had to order a key set.

Getting back on topic, I hope the drop ship occurs so I have something to play a week from now....

Indeed, the keys to my used one were long gone, and I had to get a set from Stefano too.

Quick update--Kyle has been in contact with us since Friday; he believes that, for reasons unknown as yet, the burrs aren't parallel against each other, and this accounts for the issue I've discovered. He's going to send Dan and I review units directly from Baratza when they arrive next week, while PT's continues to support the review with their excellent coffee. We will pick things back up then and hope that this issue is resolved with the production units.

Nicholas, your due diligence has made it easier for Baratza to get it right. Good job, man!
Wonder if that non-metal burr holder is the culprit? The phrase "drop-shipping" takes on a completely new meaning with precise electronic gear.

Nicholas, maybe this is a good time to ask the people at Baratza to let you open up the grinder:)

Hmm... I have to agree that this is somewhat concerning for those that have prebought this machine. Wasn't it also mentioned in one of the early articles that the moving burr for adjustment was the opposite of the standard for other grinders. Somehow the bottom burr is the one that adjusts? Or am I wrong...
One thing... If this is some sort of unforeseen design flaw and this unit has already entered production, it would be very costly to redesign to correct.
Anyway I was going to wait for the outcome on this adventure but saw that 1st Line dropped the price of the Cimbali Junior to $550.00 with free shipping so... I bought one.
I will keep a close eye on the outcomes here though... Very interesting stuff.

Hi guys,

well if the Junior was only 100$ more I think you made the right choice.

Hopefully this isn't a design flaw, but if it is they going to lose a lot of money.

Let's keep in mind this is a pre-production grinder which already has been through a lot of taking apart, putting back together, grinding alot of beans, been adjusted probably over 10 times more than in an average lifetime etc. etc.
I wouldn't be worried if i had one on order. But then i haven't so for me it's easy to speak.
