I am on my second Sette 270 since Thanksgiving. I'm getting about 10 weeks out of each unit. Both units have died in the same fashion where the motor sounds strained for a couple of days and then just stops working. There is clearly an issue here.

The issue appears to be the motor dying which is the same part in both models.

They replace part SA3 as a single unit.
Wow, this is very interesting. Notice that the MOTOR/GEARBOX ASSEMBLY (SA3) is noted as being a " Frequently needed service part" . Same goes for the actual motor. This is somewhat alarming considering we don't know the price of the assembly and we've already seen failures at < 30 lbs.

270W just died earlier this week. I'll have a replacement today. It started sounding strained right before it died. Play light is green and LCD is lit, but no motor. I've had it since the beginning of Nov and run about 2 lbs a month through it. :?

My Sette 270W is running accurately, about +1lb a week for +4 months. Added 2 shims just to get the indicators in the middle of the scale.

To keep this thread in perspective...
Baratza said there have been 10,000 Sette's sold as of April 2017, an equal amount of 270's and 270W's.

Just my 2 cents here... Bought a sette 270 this week. It seemed like a great grinder... BUT, on the first day of use I got to play a little with it dialing the grind for my machine, added a shim to have proper fineness. The final results on that day looked promising. The very next morning, powered the grinder and it wouldn't work! All lights were on, LCD display on but no digits. I tried every possible solution but to no avail. I will be returning the unit obviously on warranty after 2 days of use but debating whether or not switching to another grinder.

Purchased a Sette 270 (non-weighing). After about 2 months, when trying to grind my next shot one morning the timer counted down as usual but no motor. Removed and reinstalled burr. Worked for a week then the same thing again but this time nothing worked to get it going. Awaiting a replacement which should arrive any day.

The speed, nice light non-clumping grind, little remaining grounds are great - ideal design for how I make coffee ( 3 cappuccinos spread over breakfast, an aeropress after dinner) plus frequent change of coffee (I'm a home roaster), however, the build and noted problems are a worry. Will see how #2 goes. A brilliant design but perhaps some implementation issues.

Perhaps the issue is not W verusus regular but a large batch of bad motors just when the W was coming out; so lots of affected W models and few affected regular ones too.

Usually something like this would be the death knell of a grinder; but Baratza' service is so stellar that I'm hoping this turns out to be only a minor hiccup. In terms of price/performance and fault tolerance the Sette is off the charts; it hugely deserves some slack rather than a pile on.

Ii aint a problem when its under warranty, and like youve said Jim, Baratza customer's service seems to be on point. But what happens when you start having the same difficulties whether its motor related (and Ive read somewhere that it can only be replaced by Baratza or certified personel) or electronics failing (like mine after a day of use) ? Do you know for a fact that the motor issues has been dealt with and its now a thing of the past?

The motor issue is a thing of the past. The reason is known, it's been fixed and shouldn't happen again.
