Observation for the 270W:

If you hold the Play/Pause button for it to grind in manual, it shows the weight in grams as it grinds. A quick burst puts out about 1.5g. It's hard to put out less. The oberservation is the random (not really) numbers that show when you remove the portafilter. That's the weight in negative g, but there's no room for (-) so all I see is like 485. It isn't useful, but at least you know and can keep it tared to your PF and manually grind by weight until you press stop.

My 270 is hopefully shipping from Chris Coffee today. I am stoked, will update this thread with my observations once I receive it!

NB: Prima Coffee currently has them in stock.

I added shims and they fixed all my issues, which I think were a combination of:

* Couldn't grind fine enough (obviously)
* At the "1" grind setting coffee was getting backed up in the shoot
* The safety was cutting very early, probably from heavy use trying to get it figured out

I'm still getting used to dialing in shots, it seems to yield consistently good results, but it doesn't seem any easier to get a really great shot. And the weighing is consistently off by .3 to .5g, I'd heard that the app might be able to fix that? We'll see when it comes out.

We got our Sette 270 (not W model) last week. It arrived with the new arm covers. While, we've only had a limited time to use it, our initial impressions are highly-favorable. It's a breeze to dial-in, and the buttons for setting 3 pre-set times are just perfect for espresso. We've got ours set to 4.05, 4.1 and 4.15 sec, and use an external scale to validate. It is incredibly consistent, and fast, with light fluffy grinds. Clumping so far is minimal - but we use very fresh home-roasted beans.

At this point, we are very pleased and expect to post an update in 4-6 weeks, with more to follow once our Decent Espresso DE1 arrives.

Good luck!

J.

If its consistently under dosing you adjust the offset to a lower number... Here are the instructions per Baratza.

- Unplug grinder
- Plug in Grinder
- While booting press up and down arrow buttons...screen will flash "ofs"
- adjust using up or down arrow...recommended setting for espresso is 1.1
- press play button to lock changes

Hi guys

I'm a newbie, and this is my first post don't know if this should be posted as a different thread.

For those that already tried the grinder, could the sette be consider an upgrade over the compak k3 for espresso, just in terms of results in the cup? I read a review from another_jim comparing it with his compak k10 and for certain roasts ( the same type I usually use) he got similar results

I know one is flat and the other is conical and perhaps should not be compared but overall could I consider the sette as an upgrade? thanks!

I am guessing that offset number is number of grams before setting where motor turns off. So if it is slightly overdosing, a slightly larger offset will turn it off sooner.

Mine is slightly overdosing, 1 or 2 tenths, but it's remarkably consistent. I had variability problems earlier, but the upgraded arm sleeves seemed to fix that.

I'll try a 1.2 setting and see if I'm better or worse tomw.

You might be right...I never got around to testing. Mine was having other issues, so Baratza has sent me a replacement.

Hopefully the Brewbar app comes out soon, so they can push firmware/software updates through it...

To answer that question honestly, someone would have had to compared the two grinders. Some people here are almost soiling their pants over the performance of the Sette, but to be honest, it a grinder that is priced just about right. I really doubt you'll find much difference in the cup but if you have to find out you'll need to get one and come to your own conclusions.

LOL. It sure seems that way at times, doesn't it? Particularly the mania over the -W version, foibles and all. Welcome to HB, by the way.

By hook or by crook, this is a true statement. If they are selling them below cost, it is a product and a company not long for this world. But Baratza is an excellent company, I don't see them as selling at a loss. On the flipside, with all the "pants soiling" over the -W version, unscrupulous sellers could probably mark them up quite a bit, as long as the "new thing" mania lasts.

As long-time single doser, the straight through, low retention design looks very compelling. For six shots a day max, I couldn't care less about the speed. I'll probably get the regular version once they become widely available, since like at least one of the legends here, I will almost certainly pre-weigh, WDT and RDT (no matter how good the grinder is). The -W features would be a waste on me, since I don't want or need shortcuts, and to be honest, the horror stories so far are off putting enough that it's reinforcing why I didn't want the -W to begin with. No thanks. I'll stick with the hassle-free simplicity of the the regular version.
