75 mm flat burr grinders?

Postby Stuggi on Fri Nov 06, 2009 4:41 am

Anyone tried any of these? I'm looking at a Macap M7, which has an 800W motor and a 75mm flat burrs, which puts it somewhere next to the Major. It also has the same rated capacity as the M7K, which is quite impressing. The reason I'm interersted in this one is mostly because it's only 150€ more expensive than the M4, but almost half the price of the M7K.

The Coffee Hit description of this grinder is OK, but reading between the lines suggests that with it's straightforward scnozz it has problems with clumping:

"The MACAP MC7 Deli Grinder is a perfect grinder for locations that sell retail coffee to their customers.
It also doubles as back-up grinder for decaf or single origin coffees that you want to sell via a drip coffee machine."

See: http://www.coffeehit.co.uk/PRD_ProductD ... so-Grinder

The Super Caimano also has 75 mm flat burrs and has been very popular in the trade because it doses incredibly neatly and evenly, reducing waste and the need for distribution. Flavour profile is also good. Mark Prince of CoffeeGeek fame prefers it to the Robur. Not everyone gets on with it though.

Cheers

Technically that's the MC7900, the 600W version without a doser.

I wonder if the Super Caimano can be had for under 600€ and if it can do 12-14 kg of coffee per hour.

Apparently the SCs do get quite hot. If you look at the same website you can read about a fan mod.

Some of the busier cafes which have replaced Roburs for example with SCs because of the dosing advantages have used 2 x SCs and swap between them to keep the heat down.

Hopefully someone with trade experience can help. I'd check out spares availability, speed and backup generally as well - especially if you are going to be using it for your exciting new project.

It may be difficult to beat Mazzer all round.

All the best.

FWIW, I have been living with an M7C for about 7 months now, but at home, not in a commercial setting. This one has the doser.

You can read a few impressions about it here:

I found a paper schnozz to be helpful for dosing, no problem with clumps but that's with a doser of course.

Note too that my model, built several years ago, has a rating of 500 watts, while the MACAP website lists these at 800 watts, so beware of old stock.

Yeah, well, the site I'm looking to buy from lists more info than Macaps own site, so I'm quite safe there. :D
