Where to go while on the road?

Want to talk espresso but not sure which forum? If so, this is the right one.

During the past year I found myself in a few different cities wanting a good cup of coffee with no idea where to go. I happened onto Honolulu Coffee in Hawaii, better than SB but no god shot. I was near San Dimas CA but didn't even know about Klatch Roasting, a missed opportunity. So next week I am going to Niagara Falls. Is there a café that is worth going to? Is there a list of cafés organized by city of worthy havens.
Thanks. Brad

Another Buckeye,

We have traditionally pointed folks to CoffeeGeek's regional forums where things like this are discussed and searchable. There is also the espresso map project.

Along those lines there is also the Espresso Travel Kit

Brad,

I am working on a very open system to list and rate cafes and roasters.
It is scheduled to go live sometime in spring: http://www.coffeehunt.com

Meanwhile cannonfodder listed all the good places to search.

Start with Newark, around the NJPAC. No, the kiosk across the street ain't it, and neither are any of the restaurants within walking distance. Not two years ago, at least.

I'm not sure what an "open system" means, but the culinary rating forums I have seen are full of uninformed opinions and ratings rigged by shop owners pushing their friends and customers to "vote and vote often." They are, unfortunately, worse than worthless.

I would much rather read the individual opinions of people known to me (online or personally), so I can judge how credible they are.

Marshall, thank you for your comment - this is one of the problems I was trying to solve. I am not ready to discuss it publicly just yet, but I will follow up in pm with you.

I agree with Cannonfodder, the CG regional forums are very good and are often updated when changes in quality take place.

The biggest problems with the regionals is that the folk that go there are the folk that are looking for a place. Those that know are usually of somewhere else and don't spend a lot of time checking who's coming into their area. That, and the few posters that write up every single shot from every angle from every shop within a decade (+/-) of their zipcode. With pics.
I make my region the very first place I check when I get there, just to see who might be coming into town, or nearby. Occasionally I've filled in for those absent in places that I can at least give a clue to something dependable, or pass on comments form those that I trust.

If anyone has any recommendations in the Tampa/St/ Pete/Clearwater Florida Area, please post. Mazarros on 22nd Ave N in St. Pete is decent and they roast their own. I'm sure there must be great places other than that. But all I find are green mermaids and the people who try to emulate them, where you can get venti extra-hot dry pumpkin dulce breve mocha machiattos with whipped cream ... .
