What are you doing with the tamper base you had for the other machine, be a good place to rid yourself of it.
Cheers

Apparently my rather obtuse attempt at musical humor in my previous post caused some confusion - my apologies

Seriously, I also have been curious about tamper surface geometry and its effect on the puck density etc. I think it was HB who thought that a convex tamper might help with the troublesome small diameter single filter baskets of lever machines and I am considering trying it with my Ponte Vecchio Export.

I find dosing a single filter basket very difficult. My present technique is to grind finer than with the double, over dose it about 20% and stop tamping before the tamper hits the ridge on the inside of the basket. It does seem to make for more consistent and better shots, but the puck always hits the shower screen. Hopefully a curved tamper will provide a little more headroom and a less mess to clean up between shots.

GB,

Grind a little finer and dose just a smidge less, although I don't think hitting the screen is a problem. I've always said the 45mm single is the essence of espresso. It can be a humbling experience though, especially after using the 45 mm double for a while.

peacecup,

Nice, to hear from you and thanks for the advice. I obviously need to experiment more with down dosing on the single basket.

I am rather embarrassed that my poor and obviously obtuse approach to musical humor in relation to IMA Writer's discussion on tamper base geometry has caused so much confusion and pretty much hi-jacking of his thread. My apologies to all.

Thanks to all who responded with the helpful info on tampers, their base geometry, and small basket techniques.

Geoffrey...no problema!
Finally...as the title of this thread is by now obsolete, I will close by saying thanks to all.
