Uneven extraction with the Mazzer Mini E

Grinders are one of the keys to exceptional espresso. Discuss them here.

I want to purchase the Mazzer Mini E but I am worried about the grind distribution problem that is stated in various reviews and websites causing uneven extraction or maybe even channeling. If this $600+ grinder can't get that right I am going to consider something else.

I know of some workarounds where people will move the PF around, and that doesn't necessarily excite me as one of the reasons I like this grinder is the ability to use the PF rest during the grind.

Any other Mazzer Mini E owners out there that can report on this? It would be especially interesting if you have also used a naked PF, otherwise you may not necessarily notice this problem...

Generally speaking, grinders clump to varying degrees and the barista takes steps to improve the evenness of the distribution. Doser grinders have a small advantage over doserless grinders because the vanes offer a last chance to agitate / remix the grinds. In contrast, the words and pictures Abe et al posted about the Versalab M3 grinder show the other extreme. John Bicht loaned us one for EspressoFest 2006 and I've used it the last couple days. As claimed, it produces the most evenly distributed grind I've seen (think effortless, automatic WDT) and dramatically demonstrates just how far behind respected "high-end home" grinders like the Mazzer Mini, Mazzer Mini E, Macap, etc. are.

So the answer to your question... yes, (practically) ALL grinders are the source of grind distribution problems, which if ignored, can produce uneven extractions or maybe even channeling. The Mini E does a fine job, but a demanding barista will take steps to improve on its results (rotate the handle during dosing, redistribute post-grind with Stockfleths move, WDT, etc.).

PS: Many of our members frequent multiple coffee sites. Please avoid cross-posting your question, or mention the other site(s) to avoid repetitive responses (link). Thanks!
