The regional barista championship season runs from September through March each year. The USBC is held in April or May, in conjunction with the SCAA conference. If you volunteer, you'll get this valuable certificate which is guaranteed to improve the espresso you serve your guests by at least 2 points.

But seriously, the USBC wants and needs more amateurs to get involved. Volunteer as a judge or runner, or just show up. The effect on your shot making may even be more than psychological. The event dates are posted when they get finalized. Look out for the one in your region.

You have to be a senior judge for that hat; here's the one for junior judges:

All kidding aside, volunteering as a SCAA barista competition judge is "free" instruction and potentially great drinks in exchange for your time. Brent Fortune (Crema Bakery and Cafe) and Marcus Boni (Intelligentsia Coffee Roasters) lead an excellent workshop. It covers the rules, of course, but they also lead interesting group discussions on what makes great baristas and great espresso drinks. The workshop concludes with mock competitions led by head judges; if you're lucky, former USBC champs demonstrate the full range of scores (the "0 to 2" table - bleech, to "4 to 5" table - mmm-m).

You're not paid for your time at regionals, but certified USBC judges earn a $15/hour credit towards the SCAA conference fees and sessions.

You could also volunteer to do the dishes, or some other low profile, but really important, gig. The advantages are that no one insist that you drink anything, so you can (personal self control aside) regulate your caffeine intake (snatching the occasional latte art before it gets dumped) and the swag tends to be pretty good.
