Thanks HB for tackling the trouble to research and present your hand grinder roadshow, as an owner of a couple of these grinders I thought I would add my impressions.

I have a Pharos, a Lido and a K10 Clone (Wega), I use the Pharos at home with my Izzo Spring Lever and the Caravel, it has the full voodoodaddy mod kit. I also use it for Aeropress and find the adjustment back and forth very easy, also fine adjustments for the Izzo v Caravel are easy and repeatable (one of the mods really helps with this.) I reckon its actually quicker and easier to use than the electric, by the time i bump and brush a few times.

The Lido I usually have at work, although its just come back after a 4 week holiday in NZ where it was our traveling grinder, its matched with a Clever Coffee Dripper and its my perfect work/travel setup. Short of carting a Caravel round its hard to imagine a better coffee in the circumstances.

I tried the Lido with the levers, but they showed up the slightly inferior grind consistency and confirmed the Pharos as the equal of any grinder for consistency and quality in the cup.
LMWDP #322 i started with nothing.........i still have most of it.

I'm very happy with my Rosco Hand Grinder http://www.portaspresso.com/page1004.html. It is dedicated to grinding coffee for my portaspresso at work. It grinds directly into the basket and there are no leftover grinds left in the grinder at all.

Has anyone compared the Rosco Hand Grinder to other hand grinders?

Thanks,

Joe

I own a Rosco Mini and find the grind quality from it similar to the LIDO. It's smaller, heavier, and a bit more sleek compared to the LIDO but for brewed coffee I doubt there would be a difference although I've never done a comparison. I will say that out of the box the Rosco needs go through a bunch of beans to season the cutters. At first, it was only grinding fine and drip, but Ross informed me that over a short period of use as the cutters break in, it all settles into a wider range.

I've already seen a slight increase in coarseness with a handful of uses. With regards to build quality... the Rosco Mini could double as a lethal weapon. SOLID.

I hope to hear further chapters in the Hand Grinder Roadshow.

Based on what Dave has written so far, I'm curious to read various perspectives on how the Lido performs as a cupping grinder and as a drip grinder. It seems like it would combine really well with something like a Hario dripper as a compact, portable kit for travel and/or the office. (I've used a pharos and liked it, but it overlaps more with the grinders I already have and is a little bigger/ more expensive making it less ideal for me as a travel/back up grinder, so Dave's enthusiasm for the Lido is appealing for me).

Pulling reasonable shots of espresso is an added but less necessary bonus for me as I suppose I might bring my Pavoni on a trip once a year, but would never bring a big titan grinder. Most trips though I default to a Hario or a Clever and the compact grinder is the missing piece.

There was a Lido Roadshow in 2012 on the Green Coffee Buying Club forum if anyone is interested in further reading on this grinder. Registration is required and you will need to login to read the posts. My comments start on page eight of the thread linked below. I found the Lido worked well for espresso and pour-over and I probably would have been happier with the espresso grind if I'd known about adding a bit of moisture (RDT) to the beans to prevent static prior to the roadshow.

Yeah, I'm wondering what happened to the Hand Grinder Roadshow--unless they're waiting for an HG One.

It is still in process. A couple Team HB members received the set, they just have not gotten the writeups put together. The project kind of fell off the map but has not been forgotten. I am actually thinking about getting a Lido to replace my Zass. I just keep hesitating when I add it to the cart and look at the final price. The Lido was by far my favorite of the hand grinders.

I would love to see the Rosco Mini added to this lineup. I've been using one for almost 8 months now and love it. It'd be at the very expensive end of the group, but being that is handles espresso and drip it'd be a great comparison!
