Good question if one could tell if it was gas or wood fired. They claim to store their coffees in bourbon barrels as well. They have a great story to tell.

No one is roasting commercially over an open fire. They are using a commercial coffee roaster. In some cases, the heat source is electricity, or a gas-powered fire, or a wood fire (oak for Mr. Espresso; alder and cherry for Millar's).zin1953 wrote:Mr. Espresso in Oakland roasts their beans over an oak fire . . . well, you know what I mean.

I'm a home roaster and rarely buy roasted beans online. Earlier this year I was too ill to roast for 2 months and went through almost everything Counter Culture offered. The reasons I chose CC was 1- I've been there for cuppings when I visit family and this is payback and more importantly 2- I know that they roast on Mondays and therefore can gauge my usage and orders to get coffee at the time its degassed and ready to use w/o it going stale or waiting for an order to arrive w/o having any coffee. The web sites of the roasters don't generally state when beans are roasted and will be shipped, so I stayed with a known factor. I probably learned CC roasting on Mondays from being there, web sites not user friendly. Roasters take note.

Actually, Marvin, I've found that -- in my experience -- a majority of the roasters (and certainly the ones I buy from) do state when the beans are roasted and when they ship, AND they have a "Roasted On __________" date indicated on the bag/package.iginfect wrote:The web sites of the roasters don't generally state when beans are roasted and will be shipped . . .

I recently tried 2 of Nor'West blends. From Compass Coffee aka Mike McGinness a long time member.
Organic Delirium Espresso Blend wrote:Our signature blend is now organic, still crafted from the major coffee growing regions of Africa, Indonesia, Central & South America. Each of the blend elements is individually roasted then post roast blended to create a moderately deep yet pleasingly bright dynamic, smooth and creamy balanced chocolaty complex fruity cup with a touch of spice, citrus and floral highlights. This is lighter melange roast overall with a couple elements touching into 2nd crack. Delirium sings great as a straight shot with a moderate attack and good body giving way to a rich velvety mouth feel and delightful acidic dance. Excellent with micro-foamed milk for macchiato, cappuccino and lattes too. We currently suggest minimum 5 days rest pulling our shots nekkid doubles bit over dosed (~16.5gr) medium temp (~200f) 2oz including crema in 30 second target.
