Absolutely. I prefer lighter roasted SO beans for my cold brew. Current fave is the Guatemala Huehuetenango-Finca La Providencia Dos I think I mentioned earlier, roasted close to city +.

Yeah, it's an espresso blend, but I've heard it being used for cold brew at several coffee joints with rave reviews.

Now that I've had both Black Cat and Starbucks Iced Coffee blend for a while now, I prefer the Starbucks. It's a lot smoother, and I sort of prefer the simplicity of the blend. It just tastes like dark, smooth coffee with a nice body.

The Black Cat just has a funky taste to it. I know a lot of people say that it's citrus, but for me, I consider that generous. It tastes more herbal/medicine-like to me. And it just doesn't taste as refreshing if you drink it black. Again, funky/acidic/ashtray taste that becomes more noticeable if you dilute the concentrate with water.

That said, my pallette is still being trained, so perhaps I'll grow to appreciate a purportedly sophisticated blend like Black Cat more than the conventional Starbucks. We'll see...

While there is probably benefit to trying a wide range of flavours to train your palate... drink what you like!
IIRC darker roasts taste too ashy (?) for me in anything other than espresso.
