Triple basket for Nuova Simonelli Oscar?

So I've been trying to duplicate the incredibly oily and thick double espresso that my favorite local bar produces every time I go there. I've purchased the same beens they use and tried all sorts of brew/tamp/grind adjustments to no avail. I dropped in yesterday to enjoy a cup and asked to see the baskets they were using. Turns out they're using triple baskets to pull double shots! Cheaters! ;) Ok so my question is does anybody what triple baskets will fit the NS portafilters? And where I can get them?

Cheers,

nik

The stock Oscar portafilter may not be deep enough to accommodate a triple basket (corrections welcome). You could make your own bottomless portafilter with a drill press and hole saw, or buy one ready made. Chris' Coffee has a commercial Nuova Simonelli bottomless portafilter with triple basket, but it's not cheap.

Ok so I may try to see if I can find a metal shop to lathe one of my PF's for me. I still need a triple basket that will fit the NS PF. So will the LM triple fit a naked NS PF?

cheers,

If you buy a naked Nuova Simonelli PF from Chris' Coffee, he throws in a triple basket as well.

NUOVA SIMONELLI fits their commercial machines such as Aurelia and Appia, as well as the Oscar. This is the highest quality bottomless portafilter we offer. We needed it for our commercial customers so we decided to offer it here as well. Also included is a Nuova Simonelli triple insert basket.

If you don't want to buy the PF, you could still call them and see if they'd sell you the basket by itself.

I bought what I think is a LM ridgeless triple basket on eBay a while ago. It fits diameter wise but since I don't have a bottomless, haven't used it - one of these days I'll have to convert one of my PF's to nekkid. If you go bottomless, I assume it will fit.

I wanted to check my Oscar PF when I got home before I posted, as I made one of them a bottomless...
the 18g Synesso basket I bought from EspressoParts is a full 1/4" deeper than the NS double basket that came with the Oscar and it does fit in the non-modified PF. I just weighed an 18g amount in it and it surely can take more...possible 20+, so it may be just the ticket for you if you don't have a naked PF!

Problem solved! Popped by my local dealer and picked up a triple basket. It fits the stock NS PF without any modification! I don't know why I've read so many posts about having to make the NS PF bottomless to fit a triple.

Tomorrow we test!

Can you share the image of triple basket for Oscar?
I would like change my EES-200 to Oscar or the machine with E61 group.
How ever E61 is more expensive in local.
Do you feel Oscar is good enough in this level to do Espresso for my friend or do latte or cappuccino for me.
Very thanks!

Forget the idea that you need a crazy expensive machine to make great espresso, you don't. As long as you can get all the variables right and consistent then you can make espresso on par with your local bar with a 20k machine. A proper grinder is the key though. I'm very very happy with the Oscar. I'll send a photo of the basket tomorrow.

To nixter
Very thank for you reply and hope see your photo tomorrow.
So Oscar should be do a very good job to do Latte and cappuccino, right?
Do this machine have some problem when you use more than 1 year?
I will keep focus on OSCAR and try to forget E61.

Yes the oscar is a very capable machine. Pulls great espresso and has plenty, and I mean PLENTY of steam. These are the 2 things you'll need for caps and lattes.

I don't have time to take a pic and post right now but the triple looks identical to a NS double basket except it's deeper.

Most standard portafilters will not accomodate the greater height of a triple basket. The NS Oscar PF is an exception.

Yes, I think $20000 should be adequate.

I buy Triple basket today.
This basket perfectly fit with Oscar filter very well.
I take a photo for all reference first.

I will do a compare test few day later to compare the coffee between twice(STD) vs Triple basket in OSCAR at same time.

I look forward to your tests! Maybe it's the beans I'm using but I'm finding an odd taste in all my triple shot pulls. They look good, the timing is good, the grind is good, but they all have this odd flavor and it's not the typical over or under extracted taste. When i go back to the double basket everything tastes fine. I'll switch beans and see what happens.
