Hey, check out these guys' studies putting to rest some big debates or at least giving us info about them. (they don't sell anything)

For instance, tamping pressure makes no difference. http://socraticcoffee.com/2015/07/the-i ... xtraction/

The impact of different tampers. http://socraticcoffee.com/2015/08/compa ... er-on-tds/

Comparing TDS meters. http://socraticcoffee.com/2015/07/measu ... o-filters/

And a HB thread that alerted me to them on grinders Grinder studies by Socratic Coffee

I'm excited for what they're doing, because there isn't anyone else doing it to this level, then sharing the results freely. I'm sure Nestle has enough data to bury pretty much anyone else in the coffee world, but they're not talking.

Some of their findings are quite useful (tamping pressure, type, and the endless refractometer debate), but also, as others have pointed out, sifting coffee grinds and making scientific conclusions would take a lot more time, effort and expenditures in order to even know if the results are relevant.

Well said Tom.

SC hasn't said one word about any grinder being better or worse, they just provided their seemingly unbiased results for which I applaud them for.

Please keep it up SC!

Yes, I like how they haven't taken a side, or extrapolated their data. It is interesting seeing their grinder data that the robur is once again doing well.

I am a scientific consultant to Socratic Coffee-- my disclosure :D . Joe and Jeremy are dedicated to employing thoughtful measurement techniques and go out of their way to analyze their data using sound statistical approaches that aim to minimize biases. They remain steadfastly agnostic about any given product they test.
They are simply trying to provide objective data and analysis to the coffee community in ways that remind me of Consumer Reports.
