"Cheap beans" are often a beginner's downfall in trying to dial in a machine for various reasons, such as stale supermarket beans, over-roasted or underdeveloped, etc. I'd suggest dialing in with the beans you intend to use. It's not expensive compared to the costs of capable equipment and it will avoid an uncontrolled variable.
Here's an analogy. Using cheap beans to dial in your espresso kit is like filling your car with cheap gas and attempting a tune-up.

Been there, and done that - cheap beans are no friend to those learning espresso. Even if they are "store roasted fresh" there are often problems, so switching to a reliable bean is your first step in diagnosing issues.
