My usual dose with an Elektra basket is around 16g

I would hazard a guess that the weight variation is more due to differences in bean density than a large difference in volume of ground coffee . Light roast level = high density beans and darker roast = lower density. In this case I suspect the volume in the basket is going to be real close to the same.
