Mazzer Burrs: designated top & bottom burr, or universal?

Grinders are one of the keys to exceptional espresso. Discuss them here.

Recently picked up a used Super Jolly. It was so caked with crud that the motor wouldn't even spin, but I took a chance and bought it anyway albeit for pretty cheap. I looked up a few tutorials on dis-assembly and cleaning, and I got it all cleaned up. Now that I'm in the re-assembly mode, I realize that I don't know for sure which is the bottom burr and which is the top burr. Are they exchangeable/universal, or is there a designated top and bottom burr? They look identical to me, but I don't want to make a stupid mistake.....

Thanks!

For flat burr grinders, the top/bottom burrs are identical. For conicals, they're not (sorry ).

I can testify to that. Just replaced my SJ burrs last week.
However I carefully inspected mine to check for top/bottom whilst removing 8)

I just ordered some new burrs for my SJ as well. How much coffee have you had to run through the new burrs if any in order to break them in and get good shots?

Apparently they are pre-seasoned: "Moreover, these replacement burrs are pre-seasoned, so Mazzer's legendary grinding consistency can be expected right out of the box."

The Ditting machined burrs were marked top & bottom and while it's in German I assume the K30 burrs are marked the same way. I've never seen any markings on the Mazzer burrs so you should be fine.

They're marked S-1 (fixed) and D-1 (rotating) Maybe statische and drehen ?

Feststehend - stationary & Drehend - rotating.
