ok, the daily recap. I started the day trying some doubles, tried two and failed. 1st at 15.5gms big gusher, Upped the dose on the second and used bottomless portafilter with 17.5grams. The shot started around the edges and had nice color, i had hoped it would spread to the center and pour nicely but the pour rushed to the center and started gushing and a bit of spraying. I am not sure if my distribution was flawed or i need to tighten the grind. I didn't want to keep wasting coffee and water until i heard some feedback.

After that I went back to my single and totally NAILED 3 singles in a row, I was ecstatic watching each shot pour they looked so delicious. The whole fam had great coffees today so I am in much much better spirits. I just can't get that double sorted out yet..

Tighten the grind if it's pouring too fast on the double. Tighten it until your pour is 25-30 sec from the time you flip the lever. I usually use 16-17 gms for a double on my Anita which works fine. Michael

Hi Jeff most grinders will be different from each other where as your setting 3 may not (and most likely won't) match someone else's 3.

It sounds like you just need to tighten the grind then try it. If need be go finer. There is always a process of dialing in a machine/blend. Luckily once you have it set there shouldn't be any need to further dial it in except to compensate for the beans aging over the coarse of a week or two and these are very subtle adjustments.

You might take a look at Dialing in a new espresso machine by cannonfodder (Dave Stephens).

Also see Just starting out, grinder setting advice. When dialing in a grinder, forget the "3 clicks above zero" stuff and learn the feel of the coffee at the ballpark setting. You'll save a lot of coffee.
