Based on what I've been able to find, my Gaggia Factory needs a 51mm tamper. However, after having ordered one I find that it leaves a slight gap around the edge. Not sure if this is to be expected or if I should be looking for a 52-53mm.

I have a Gaggia Factory and use the EPNW EP5 tamper in 51mm (exactly 51mm as far as any of my micrometers can tell!)... Mine shows a slight "gap" around and it STILL gets caught/stuck at times.... 51mm works FINE for me! I'd NOT recommend going to anything any larger (when I checked the double basket size further down in the basket it tapered to 51mm about 1/2 the way down, soooo....)...

The Factory uses the La Pavoni millennium grouphead which is 51mm. A small gap around the basket is normal.
