Stepped vs. stepless...again MACAP M4

Grinders are one of the keys to exceptional espresso. Discuss them here.

I need to order a new grinder. The Rocky is up for sale and I can't decide between the MACAP stepped or stepless. I like the idea of being able to switch for press pot quickly but I have to admit I only need to do this occasionally. On the other hand, the dial on the stepless leaves a lot to be desired from all accounts.

Someone give me a shove.

Fr.

I finally made the jump today...after a lot of thought. Stepless. The grinder is really for espresso, etc., so that was the focus of my decision. Drip and press don't require that kind of exacting grind. You can get an inexpensive grinder for other types of coffee.

The adjustment mechanism seems to be Macap's largest advantage over the stepless Mazzer. By all accounts it's much easier to use and adjust...unless you want to make vast changes between grinds.

My guess is that in the end a stepped wouldn't be changed between grinds that often.

Fr. John,

I've got the stepless M4 and switch between fine and coarse all the time. Takes me about 35-40 secs using both hands to turn from about '1.5' to '6' on the dial. I say go with the stepless, you never know when you might want to make micro adjustments down the road. Either way I'm sure you'll be pleased with the grinder.
