It must be possible to pull a single shot with the Classic but how? The single basket seems useless apart from pods.

Use the double basket (and 17-19g of coffee). I have spent the past few weeks thinking that it must be possible to pull a double shot using the Gaggia Classic; I just don't know how.

I can't seem to get a decent shot (I never use the single basket) from a pull of more than 1.25oz or so. Perhaps it has something to do with the terrifying intra-shot temperature change numbers that are posted here:

I have a stack of single baskets gathering dust next to the plastic throwaway tampers. The general wisdom holds that a thinner puck will fracture more easily, leading to channeling and poorer shots. Many cafes will toss half of a double pour when a single is requested simply because it's less hassle than readjusting the grinder or risking a sink shot. Occasionally I've read reports of good results from a single basket, but I ask "Why bother?" For reducing caffeine intake?

just remember that "general wisdom" is often neither.
