Kenyan roasting suggestions

I'm currently roasting/drinking these Kenya beans as well as some of Sweet Maria's Panama Gesha. I use an old, non-upgraded HotTop. With the same roast settings (and both from a cold machine start), these particular Kenyas reach first crack a little over a minute sooner than the Panama for me. I tho...

San Francisco HB Get Together Report

I first thought this was 2010 coffee, but if it is #5, then this is from the 2009 auction. But, it's interesting what Sweet Maria's has to say about this coffee in this year's auction: "The 2010 Honduras Cup of Excellence went too high for us - the minimum winning bid for a coffee in top ten was $7.15

San Francisco HB Get Together Report

Yes, thank you, thank you, thank you -- that was awesome. I'm definitely looking forward to the Esmeralda "auction lots" this year. I loved 2008 (both my own roasts of green and several others' -- even though I never did try the over $100/lb ones, just the mid-range auction lots), but was disappoint...

San Francisco HB get together

Actually, I'm used to paying to park at the Ferry Building farmer's market so that's not a big deal. On Saturdays there is a flat rate garage just for the market ($6). Or if we just do a quick pick up, there is 2 hour on-street if you get there early (before 8am -- paid at meters).

San Francisco HB get together

We plan to hit the farmers market right before 8am at the ferry building (and park near there). Google says the #14 bus leaves steuart and mission at 9:09 and arrives mission and 11 at 9:20. Is that a good plan? Or is pay parking the better idea?

San Francisco HB get together

This is exciting! I had a thought about cupping spoons: Wouldn't ceramic asian soup spoons work well? No possibility of metal taste transferring, often white to better show color, have deep bowls, and cheap and readily available in stores. Should I bring some to try?

San Francisco HB get together

This sounds fantastic. I and my partner in coffee have cut back on doing much espresso at home because we love the social aspects of sharing espresso and espresso talk (and would rather go to Barefoot, Redberry and Verve to get our espresso+social fix with other coffee lovers). I still do roast and ...

Pheasant Creek Coffee's One Year Anniversary!

Hi Geoff, Congratulations from this California Barefoot regular who visited my family in Cary last Thanksgiving and was so happy to find your shop. Remember me? I sure do miss your great espresso, caps, and french presses, and the wonderful atmosphere of your cafe -- It was a treat sitting with grea...

Does a good center tamp take care of the sides?

When this technique was brought up on the Brewtus group, we tried it but didn't like it because it was a pain to knock out the puck (the basket comes too). But, as Chris has discussed, it's important to rotate the portafilter when dosing. We have a Mazzer Mini-E (no doser, just a funnel), and I find...

HB celebrates our 100th member!

Very cool, consider me entered! I'm also a Brewtus owner and Brewtus group member. My boyfriend and I discovered great tasting espresso at Barefoot Coffee Roasters in Santa Clara, CA and then tried to make some at home using the cheapie Krups/Delonghi machines we both had. Utter failue. But using a ...
