Any roasters on par with Howell and Wendelboe?

Sorry, I missed this. Well, for a start ... You seem to be speculating that coffee producers are making some conscious decision to sort out 88+ coffee from a lot and gutting the quality of the remaining coffee so that it falls to like 84 and then they end up better off overall. I don't think that's ...

Is Sweet Maria's selling past-its-prime coffee?

Exactly. And over the last few years, there has been all sorts of shipping havoc, what with Covid, the Suez canal and now with the Panama canal drying up. Even when these things are nowhere near where you are looking to ship from, they can bugger things up, because it might be that the ship from whe...

Light roasted coffee all taste very similar to me

I don't know how dark these roasts are, but I think that the suggestion is that it may be possible that they taste similar because they are too dark, not because they are too light!

I'm done with 'shipped' coffee

I post this as someone who roasts a lot of what I drink. I'd just suggest that before anyone spends a bunch on a home roaster based on reading people write that they are getting better results than roasteries, they reach out to some local home roasters that claim their results are good and see if th...

I'm done with 'shipped' coffee

Commenting on this is a bit "how long is a piece of string", particularly without knowing what your preferences are. The good news is that you seem to know what your preferences are, and you absolutely shouldn't feel FOMO that you have to go and order from some far flung roaster that others are sayi...

Any roasters on par with Howell and Wendelboe?

Yes, you're quite right to point out that things are quite opaque to consumers and that we can't assume that higher retail prices mean higher prices to producers. But like I do think that if you are price sensitive, you are probably pretty likely to experience a quality drop. I just cupped about 35 ...

Any roasters on par with Howell and Wendelboe?

Yep, I was going to say exactly this! Another vote for TPC Omni. I've signed up to the mailing list for Aviary. I've had some great roasts from Christopher Feran, and he is perhaps one of the roaster/green buyer humans in the world of coffee whose skills I most respect

Any roasters on par with Howell and Wendelboe?

If you want to try something to work out if you might see value in this, grab double your standard dose of whatever coffee you are currently drinking, pick out the lightest bean and put it aside. Repeat until you have sorted out the lightest 50% from the darkest 50%. Then brew both and taste side by...

Any roasters on par with Howell and Wendelboe?

There's a broader issue and a a narrower question here. Let me address the broader issue. The broader issue is that good coffee has probably always been underpriced, it hasn't been priced sustainably, and we are losing it because of it. There are lots of reasons for this, but a few issues are: 1. Co...
